Tea Break: Thanks

Situation 2: Giving Thanks to a Section Chief

A section chief, an immediate boss, treats his female subordinate to dinner after work. He is a friendly man just several years older than her.

会社員：課長、今日はどうもごちそうさまでした。 Kachou, kyouwa doumo gochisousama deshita. ‘Thank you very much for the meal today.’

課長：いやいや、たまにだからね。 Iyaiya, tamani dakarane. ‘Oh, no, don’t make a big deal out of it [(literally) it’s just a rare thing].’

会社員：ほんとうにありがとうございました。 Hontouni arigatou gozaimashita. ‘Thank you (again) very much.’

課長：また、明日。 Mata, ashita. ‘See you tomorrow.’

会社員：はい、失礼いたします。 Hai, shitsurei shimasu. ‘Yes, I’ll see you tomorrow.’
